What to Expect

Waiting room at Barton Memorial Hospital

We know that you probably did not expect to end up in an Emergency Department today.  We understand that you may be hurting and that this is a time of extremely high stress.  Our goal is to quickly and efficiently diagnose and treat life-threatening diseases.   We want to exceed your expectations during your stay in our Emergency Department.  We will listen to your concerns and respect your wishes.  We will explain your work-up, diagnosis, and treatment and we will work together with you to come up with a care plan. Please let us know how we can best assist you at any time.

We may not find a diagnosis during your visit.  Our priority is recognizing and treating life and limb threatening illness and injury. Once we have ruled out a serious condition requiring immediate intervention or hospitalization we may determine that you will need to see a different specialist or primary care doctor on an out-patient basis.  We may initiate a therapy that will need monitoring. Certain conditions require further testing that we do not have access to from the Emergency Department.

Why does the ED stay take so long?

You can’t schedule an emergency.  Sometimes many people come in to the ER at the same time.   We treat the most critical patients first.  Sometimes while you are waiting for results of tests or imaging more people will arrive that we must attend to immediately.  Be assured that we have not forgotten about you. There are many members of the Emergency Department team who are constantly working to ensure that everyone is getting their needs met.
